What Are Cookies?

Definitions
Session Cookie:
A session cookie is temporary; it does not collect information from a user’s computer, instead only storing information in the form of a session identification that does not personally identify the user. A session cookie may also be referred to as “transient cookies.”
Persistent Cookie:
A persistent cookie is used over a much longer period of time with an expiration date tagged to them by the issuer. This means, even when your browser is closed, the cookie will be stored within it and each time you return to the website that created this cookie, or you go to a website that has a resource produced by the cookie’s issuer (e.g. an ad), this data is returned to the issuer.
These types of cookies are data files capable of providing websites with user preferences, settings and information for future visits, providing convenient and rapid access to familiar objects, which enhances the user experience (referred to as “UX”). A persistent cookie may also be referred to as a “stored” or “permanent” cookie.
Browser Independent Cookie:
A browser independent cookie, such as a “Flash Cookie” or “ Silverlight Cookie” are similar to persistent cookies, however, instead of being stored in the User’s browser, they are stored in their respective program file.
First-party Cookie:
A small amount of text stored in the user’s computer that is created by the website the user is visiting. By default, first-party cookies are allowed in every Web browser. If you were to disable first-party cookies, a website could not keep track of your activity as you move from page to page.
Third-party Cookie:
A small amount of text stored in the user’s computer that is created by a website with a domain name other than the one the user is currently visiting.
EU Cookie Law:
Also referred to as the “EU Cookie Directive,” this European Union (“EU”) legislation requires four (4) actions from website owners who use cookies:
- Any User accessing the owner’s site must be informed that the site uses cookies.
- The website owner must disclose detailed information about how data collected through the use of cookies will be used.
- As a User accesses the site, the website owner must give the User an option to accept or reject the use of cookies on the site.
- If a User rejects or refuses to allow cookies to be stored while visiting a site, that the site owner ensures no cookies of any kind will be placed on the device the User is accessing the site with.
General Data Protection Regulation:
Also referred to as “GDPR,” is a legal framework that sets guidelines for the collection and processing of personal information from individuals who live in the European Union (EU).
How Do We Use Cookies?
Cookies do not contain any information that personally identifies you, but personal information that we store about you may be linked, by us, to the information stored in and obtained from cookies. The cookies used on the website include those which are strictly necessary cookies for access and navigation, cookies that track usage (performance cookies), remember your choices (functionality cookies), and cookies that provide you with targeted content or advertising.
We may use the information we obtain from your use of our cookies for the following purposes:

Category 1: Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies, also considered third-party cookies, are used for advertisement re-targeting and behavioral advertising. Pages of a site are tagged in a way where advertisers can track a user or their device across different websites, building a User profile based on habits and allowing for more targeted messaging based on User interests.

Managing Cookies
Users who wish to not have cookies stored in their web browsers when accessing this site should change individual browser settings to refuse or block site cookies.
